Year 2 Day 31: Jane Eyre

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 32. Today’s recommended book is : Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte .

Several weeks ago I recommended a new book called The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins. After reviewing that book for you a couple of people commented that this book was a modern day re-telling of Jane Eyre which got me thinking; had I ever actually fully read Jane Eyre or did I just skim or use cliff notes in high school - or maybe watch an old movie (oh the horror !)

As I began reading it several things came back to me . I even remembered Mr Rochester’s dog but as the pages continued to turn and the plot continued to twist , double back and twist again It became evident I had never before fully read this book which deserves to be considered a classic psychological thriller .

With suspense and deep character development , and even a bit of romance this book is not a quick read (I normally finish 2 novels a week , I have been reading this one nearly 3 weeks now ) but it is certainly a book to be savored and one I think everyone should ACTUALLY read (not just skim , cliff , or view) at least once in their lives I am certainly glad I now have done so myself .

And here’s another plus ! We now carry this classic in the beautiful Chiltern Classics line with a ridiculously beautiful embossed cover and gold gilded pages . This sigh worthy beautiful book currently sells for $25 a copy . Just seeing the book binding is enough to make any book lover smile . Check out all the Chiltern Classics on display at our store , you will fall in love with these little beauties .

“ Today is only one day in all the days that will ever be . But what will happen in all the other days that ever come can depend on what you do today.” That is a quite from Ernest Hemingway’s book : For Whom the Bell Tolls , which was published in 1940. It is also included on page 20 of today’s recommended book .

In honor of the airing of the new Ken Burns documentary on PBS entitled: Hemingway , today’s recommended book is “Quotations of Ernest Hemingway”.

This little hardcover book is filled with quotes from the literary great . Some are from his famous books , others are from letter to friends and family . Many of these quotes center on his quest to be a great writer which I found particularly interesting . It gives you a glimpse into his thought process . To get more than a glimpse you can’t watch the series or read more works by Hemingway .

This small hardcover book of book of quotations sells for $9.95 a copy .

Year 2 Day 29: The Hero Code

Chatting Books Online Year 2 Day 29. Today's recommended book The Hero Code: Lessons Learned from Lives Well Lived is the new inspirational book from General William H. McRaven who brought is the shop favorite Make Your Bed.

General McRaven relates the attributes that he believes make someone a hero and relates them with examples told through anecdotes from his own life about times when he crossed paths with real life heroes. He uses the stories of these people to explain the "code" that he has found to be a formula of sorts for living a noble and perhaps heroic life which he believes is attainable for anyone willing to commit to these simple characteristics.

This is another powerful little book from a man with an amazing breadth of experience in leadership. This hardcover book sells for $22 a copy.

Year 2 Day 28: Abandonded Louisiana

Chatting Books Online, Year 2 , Day 28. Today's recommended book is one that is new to us , and as of October 2020 was new to everyone. That book is "Abandoned Louisiana : Under a Bayou Moon " by Mike Cooper.

In this book Mike Cooper traveled over 4000 miles of backroads in Louisiana looking for abandoned structures, things and places and photographing them at night using creative lighting techniques to produce interesting, somewhat otherworldly photos.

Louisiana has quite a few interesting abandoned building; from churches to general stores and gas stations but Mr. Cooper also found and photographed other abandoned places like a water part complete with smiling sea monsters and an abandoned minor league baseball stadium (no , not that one) . There are abandoned cars and trucks, a few campers, and quite a few landlocked boats in his photos. Then there are the signs for structures since long gone leaving you to wonder what happened to that driving range, or movies theater , or motel .

I particularly like that he took his pictures in the dark of night with such interesting lighting . It really lends a rather ethereal beauty to places that in other light (figuratively and literally) might be seen as an eyesore.

This paperback book is 112 pages and currently sells for $24.99 a copy.
