Year 2, Day 96: That Summer

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 96. Today's recommended book is: That Summer by Jennifer Weiner.

Here is another light , beach read for those of you so inclined (I know I like a little brain candy this time of year particularly ) . In this novel we meet two Dianas and learn the way their lives have intertwined unbeknownst to them, and how their friendship can help them both grow and heal.

Along with Northeastern beach scenes enough to make you feel the breeze and smell the ocean this is another that will keep you turning pages.

This 432 page novel is currently available at our shop in hardcover selling for $28.00 a copy.

Year 2, Day 95: Red Riding Hood

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 95. Today's recommended book is:Red Riding Hood as retold and illustrated by James Marshall.

The familiar fairy tale gets whimsical illustrations and a happy ending in this retelling by James Marshall. In my five years so far at the bookstore this is my favorite version of Red Riding Hood mainly because Granny is an avid reader who finds the whole getting eaten by a wolf thing very inconvenient mainly because it disturbs her book reading (it is very dark in the belly of wolves you know. And have no fear, like I said , in the end both Red and Granny are just fine saved by a very nice hunter .

This hardcover storybook currently sells for $18.99 a copy.

Year 2, Day 93: Country Store to Corner Market

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 93. Today's Recommended Book is Country Store to Corner Market, Alabama, Louisiana , and Mississippi by Raymond Bial.

This is a paperback pictorial history of corner stores and general stores in the south. While I did not see any pictures from St Francisville there are several pictures from Pointe Coupe so you just may see an ancestor if you have family previously in the grocery store business. So much to learn about the growth of stores in the south from Mom and Pop to today's supermarkets and fascinating pictures giving a snapshot of a simpler time.

This paperback is 96 pages and currently sells for $23.99 a copy.

Year 2 Day 92: Louisiana Faces

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 92. Today's recommended book is: Louisiana Faces: Images of a Renaissance. This coffee table book combines the talents of two of our friends and favorites author Jason Berry and photographer Philip Gould.

This book is unusual and beautiful, bright and hopeful . I just find it a lovely celebration of all people Louisiana but you may wish read the publisher's description:

Since the late 1970s, Louisiana a state long known for outrageous politicians has witnessed a blossoming of the arts and their enthusiastic reception by a national, and even world-wide, audience. ...

Louisiana Faces documents in images and words the human texture of this remarkable renaissance, not only the painters, sculptors, chefs, musicians, poets, and writers who create the art, but also the ordinary people who in their daily and seasonal rhythms inform that art. Some are living legends, others well-kept secrets; all have a place, and a face, at the feast.

Philip Gould confirms his own part in the renaissance with the 125 stunning portraits in Louisiana Faces. ... Writer Jason Berry complements Gould's images with a probing, witty essay that explores the parallels between art and life. Using meld of interviews, anecdotes, history, and commentary, Berry treats outsized political figures and pop culture celebrities as a parade of inspiration for Louisiana artists.

And here's an extra special bit. We have a few copies of this now out of print book signed by both Berry and Gould.

This hardcover coffee table book is 135 pages and currently sells (even the double signed copies ) for $39.95 a copy.

Year 2, Day 90 : Julia Child: People Who Love to Eat Are Always The Best People and other wisdom.

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 90. Today's recommended book is Julia Child: People Who Love to Eat Are Always The Best People and other wisdom.

Way back on Day 15 of this Chatting Books odyssey I recommended one of my favorite cookbooks of all time Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I am one of those freaks who watched Julie and Julia and became so entranced with the idea of cooking through the entire book that they immediately bought the tome and set about it. And got really far (though I made no duck and no aspics) , but really this book teaches you the basics and becomes the base of everything you cook thereafter and you meet the irrepressible Julia Child whose character comes through every page. I was entertained by old videos of Julia Child before this, I was intrigued and obsessed after. And now we have a book of her wit and wisdom. Quotes such as "Don't forget the Butter - the French NEVER do", and "Always remember if you are alone in the kitchen and you drop the lamb, you can always just pick it up . Who's going to know?". and "serious artist or weekend amateur, it's more fun cooking for company in company". and many other such witicisms. When I first ordered this little gift book I thought it was one I would order, read, possibly recommend but ultimately return to the shelf (I have been on a major possession purge lately you know), but alas it is a keeper so I better make room - but it is small so it's okay.

This gift sized hardcover makes the perfect gift for your cokking friends. It is 148 pages and currently sells for $18.95 a copy.
