Year 2 Day 64: Louisiana Stories

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 64. Today's recommended book is : Louisiana Stories edited by Ben Forkner.

Louisiana has played a rich part in literary history , not the least of it has been the short stories written by Louisiana authors and about the area. Anthologist Ben Forkner (Audubon on Louisiana) has gathered together a collection of short stories that tell the tale of Louisiana fiction from authors such as george Washington Cable, Kate Chopin, and William Faulkner but also stretching into contemporary fiction with authors like Ernest Gaines, and james Lee Burke among others.

Great for the days when you are not quite ready to start an entire book but would rather read a short story to get your literary Louisiana fiction fix.

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 63. Today's recommended book is Sophistication Is Overrated by The Slageter Sisters, Babs Horner and Susan Palma.

What do you get when you combine two sisters, one of whom is a world-class caterer and the other a fabulously over-the-top decorator, both of whom have an irreverent wit and will say just about anything to get a laugh? You get this book that is basically an "any theme you can think of " party how-to. Each section takes a theme and gives a menu and all associated recipes, a design and decorating motif and a little extra inspiration and scoop from the sisters.

This oversized hardcover book is 171 pages and sells for $55 a copy.

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 62, Today's recommended book is another Seuss favorite from my own childhood. This one is : Horton Hears a Who ! by Dr. Seuss.

As with all Seuss books I love the bouncy, rhyming nature of this book that makes it a joy to read out loud (sometimes you might like to read it out loud even when alone, just saying...). And as with all Seuss books there is both a story and a message. In this one Horton the elephant hears a sound coming from a dust speck and discovers an entire town so small it fits on a tiny speck of dust. That town is in peril and needs Horton's protection but as he endeavors to save them no one believes they exist and try to thwart Horton's help. So Horton gets every Who in Whoville (whom we will meet again in The Grinch who stole Christmas) to make all the racket they can to be heard because as he tells us " A person's a person. No matter how small" .

This hardcover storybook currently sells for $16.99 a copy.

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 61. Today's recommended book is a new one to cross my path called : Around the World in 80 Plants by Jonathan Drori and illustrated by Lucille Clerc.

This is a neat book that travels around the world but instead of (a la Jules Verne) doing it in 80 days this author circumnavigates the globe by choosing a total of 80 plants that each played some interesting part in the history, culture, folklore , or some combination of the above in each region of the globe. It is really fascinating to learn about these plants. As an example the plants chosen for the USA include : Spanish Moss (did you know it is not a moss or fungus at all but actually related more closely to the pineapple ?) , the Southern Magnolia (this local beauty is actually a descendant of one of the earliest flowering plants in the world from before the Cretaceous period?), and Cannabis (an early draft of The Declaration of Independence was actually written on Hemp)?

Truly Fascinating stuff and beautifully illustrated . And, I have just discovered that this book is actually a follow up to his earlier book " Around the World in 80 Trees", well I guess I need to see that one too !

This hardcover book is 216 pages and currently sells for $24.99 a copy.
