Year 2, Day 128 : The Final Girl Support Group

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 128. Today’s featured book is:The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix.

With a blend of seat of your pants slasher horror and darkly funny campyness in The Final Girl Support Group author Gradyn Hendrix once again deftly blends these two seemingly dissimilar genres.

Last summer Grady Hendrix gave us a similar darky funny / forror blend in The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires . This summer he brings us the story of a group of Final Girls. What is a "Final Girl" you may ask? You know how when you are watching a slasher movie it starts out with a big group of friends at the summer camp, or the late night party in the woods, or spending the night in a haunted house on a dare and one by one everyone is killed off....except one final girl who manages to best the beast and get away? You ever wonder what becomes of that Final Girl after the movie rights are sold off, the cousin of the original killer tries to come back for revenge, and the movie rights are sold off again? They become what is known as a "Final Girl" and there is actually a support group to help them get over the trauma . This book is about that group - and maybe the new slasher(s) who come back yet again.

This edge of the seat funny thriller is currently available in hardcover, it is 352 pages, and sells for $26.00 a copy . While you are in the store picking it up you may want a copy of The Southern Book Club's Guide to Vampire Slaying as well , it is currently available in paperback and it is pretty funny too. My review of that one was way back on Day 42 in year 1 of Chatting Books Online last April in case you want to flip back through and read that review as well.

Year 2, Day 125: The Personal Librarian

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 125. Today’s featured book is:The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Cristopher Murray.

Marie Benedict's writes historical fiction based on the lives of important women in history to help share their stories even if in a somewhat fictionalized way. You may have read some of her other books such as Carnefie's Maid, The Mystery of Mrs. Christie, and The Other Einstein, to name a few.

In this book we meet Belle de Costa Green, the savvy, sophisticated, witty , intelligent woman who served as personal librarian to J P Morgan and was responsible for the building of the collection at the Pierpont Morgan Library. We also learn that Ms. Green had a secret that she protected at all costs and that enabled her to live this life. Ms. Greene was actually born Marion Greener , the daughter of the first african american graduate of Harvard University . During reconstruction there was something of a peaceful period where it looked like people of color would immediately be treated equally and this was when Mr. Greener attended Harvard and became a college professor but all too soon the world turned cruel and he was embroiled in the fight for equal rights. In an effort to protect their family, who were of lighter skin, Marion became Belle and invented a Portguagse heritage to "pass" thus enabling her to live and thrive among the well-to -do of New York in the early 1900’s - but at what cost.

To write this book Ms. Benedict enlisted a co-writer because she feared as a white woman she could not embody or understand the powerful emotions that must have consumed a woman of color at this time , knowing if her secret ever got out the results could be catastrophic to herself and her family, if not actually deadly .

I must admit, I knew nothing of Ms. Greene and not much about the library before reading this book but like all good works of historical fiction this one has captured me and I want to learn more. . So much so I have added it to my bucket list for a future visit to New York. From what I have read in this book and the photos available in the online collection it seems extraordinary.

This hardcover novel currently sells for $ 27.00 a copy.

Year 2, Day 124: Preserving our Roots

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 124. Today’s featured book is:Preserving Our Roots : My Journey to Save Seeds and Stories by John Coykendall and Christina Melton.

Did you know that it is thought that over 94% of fruits and vegetables that were grown 100 years ago are functionally extinct today ? When I read that statement first I had to learn what "Functionally Extinct" means . It means that while there may be some of that variety of butter bean seeds in your grandmothers back fridge most people don't know they exist and cannot access them - so "functionally extinct". The gentleman who wrote this book made it his life's work to collect seeds and stories , centered mainly in his home community of Washington Parish , Louisiana.

The book is a collection of stories about and from the people, pictures and information on the seeds he has saved , and recipes of home cooking type foods to make once you have grown the seeds. It has delicious recipes for things like Collard Greens, Cornpone, Sweet Potatoe Pie, Fig Preserves and much more.

This treasure trove of home cooking and stories was published by LSU Press , it is 190 full color pages, hardcover bound and currently sells for $39.95 a copy.

Year 2, Day 123 : All in a Day

Chatting Books Online Year 2, Day 123. Today’s recommended book is: All In A Day by Cynthia Rylant.

Here we have the most positive way to start or end a day with a storybook. It is all about the possibilities that a day holds. After talking about all the fabulous, every day , things that might happen in a day it reminds us to :

"So live it well, make it count, fill it up with you.

The day's all yours, it's waiting now... See what you can do."

I'm all about positive expectations so naturally I love this one.
